Grifols Jobs – Grifols to invest €77m in Dublin plant


Spanish plasma pharmaceuticals group Grifols has announced plans to invest another €77m in its biologics plant at Grange Castle in Co Dublin.

The company said it was bringing forward plans for the construction of a purification plant for the protein “albumin” to meet rising demand.

Construction will begin towards the end of this year, with the plant expected to be ready by early 2020.

Last October Grifols announced 140 jobs and a €90m investment in its Bioscience Division global operations centre in Grange Castle in Dublin, Ireland.

Grifols is one of the global leading companies in the manufacture of plasma-based medicines.

Merck Jobs Cork – 70 new jobs with €55 million investment


Up to 70 new jobs are to be created at Merck’s Cork facility after two new R&D facilities were opened this week.

A new speciality membrane facility (SMF) and chromatography media facility (CMF) opened by pharmaceutical company Merck in Cork will see the creation of new jobs in the region, with up to 70 new roles expected “in the next 18 months”.

Based in Carrigtwohill, the closure of a similar facility in the US means that 90pc of the company’s entire membrane manufacturing, used as filtration for Merck’s products, will come form Cork, according to Martin McAuliffe, MD of the Cork operation.

Shire jobs – 400 jobs for Meath in $400m biotech investment


Biotech giant Shire is to create 400 new permanent jobs in Piercetown, Co Meath.

The company is about to begin construction of a new
manufacturing operation on a 120-acre site.

The roles at Shire’s new campus in Meath will consist of highly-skilled, full-time jobs in the areas of R&D, operations, technical staff, engineering and construction.

The new operation will employ the latest bioprocessing techniques and flexible production strategies, enabling it to supply both clinical and commercial-scale products.

Pharmaceutical-maker Alexion is weighing up Ireland for its next manufacturing investment.

Ireland is in the running for facilities which will produce the company’s new pipeline of drugs, according to one of the company’s most senior executives.

“We are planning where and how production for our pipeline of drugs will happen and Ireland is being considered,” said Alexion’s Julie O’Neill. “I don’t want to say too much as it is still early days”.

Alexion has already earmarked three quarters of a billion worth of investment for Ireland since arriving in 2013.

Alere Jobs Galway – 40 new jobs announced


Medical technology company Alere is to triple the size of its operations in Galway, which will result in the creation of 40 new jobs.

The company’s Ballybrit operation oversees the processing and delivery of medical diagnostic tests, and already employs over 100 people.

Following its expansion, the company will manage more than 150 million tests at its Galway site.

The Galway centre already oversees the processing and delivery of Alere’s healthcare tests in Europe and the Middle East, and it will also add Eastern Europe, Latin America and Africa to its portfolio.

GSK Jobs – GSK to €12m in Cork manufacturing plant


Multinational pharmaceutical giant GSK has announced a new €12m investment at its manufacturing plant outside Cork city in Currabinny.

GSK said that €9.5m will be spent on its Kilo Scale Facility, while the remainder will be used in its technical laboratory in Cork.

The new purpose built Kilo Scale Facility will allow the site to begin manufacturing highly specialised active ingredients for newer, targeted oncology drugs.
